February 18th, 2013 - Prague Trip
Old Town Square
We arrived in Prague around 4:30pm on Monday afternoon after a 7-hour train ride from Budapest, and it was only about a 15 minute walk from the train station to our hostel. The train was cool because we got our own little compartment to spread out in. We felt like we were on our way to Hogwarts and we were waiting for the trolley to come by with chocolate frogs and Bertie Bott's every flavor beans, sorry for the Harry Potter rant. We had heard in comparison to Budapest, there were going to be a LOT more people and it was definitely evident when we got there. Prague was basically the NYC of the Czech Republic. Taller buildings, more shopping and SO many more people. Our hostel was alright, great location, but the people weren't as friendly. Although when we checked into our room we were talking with one of the receptionists, and it turned out he graduated from Radford and all his siblings went to Virginia Tech, how crazy is that?! Hokie Nation, woop!
Another one of the travel groups from Lugano was going to be in Prague at the same time as us so it was going to be a total of like 32 of us from the program together in Prague. For dinner, we grabbed a quick bite at a family owned Czech restaurant. I got roasted chicken and boiled potatoes. I tried the "potato dumplings" which is a common Czech food, but I wasn't a fan. We all went on a pub crawl for a guy in my program's 21st birthday. And it was insane. We went to a total of 5 bars ending at the "biggest club in Central Europe." It was 5 stories and the bottom floor was an ice bar. On Tuesday we ended up sleeping in a bit and went shopping at one of their biggest malls called Palladium. The prices were pretty similar to the U.S. For dinner we went to another Czech restaurant. Czech food wasn't exactly my favorite so I ended up getting onion soup and Caesar salad, I know boring. But I did try a bite of someone's boar, yes I said boar. It didn't really taste a whole lot different from steak, haha. We all took it easy this night since the pub crawl the night before was pretty expensive and tiring.
On Wednesday we did our site seeing! We ended up walking around on our own instead of an official tour to save some money. We crossed the Charles Bridge (which I think is a famous scene in a movie?) to the castle town as well as through the Jewish quarter. It was snowing and quite freezing so we were all pretty tired by the end of the day but I managed to make it to some shops nearby. I finally made my first purchase for myself, couldn't believe it took me this long, but I got a few things at this place called The NewYorker which was comparable to an H&M or Forever21. A few of us from the hostel were a little tired of the Czech food so we were in search for some American cuisine. My friend Jackie and I stumbled upon a TGIFridays and we couldn't believe it. We got buffalo wings, naturally, and it was a great last night in Prague.
